Why screen your dog's eyes?

Dogs can inherit a range of eye disorders. Some are congenital — present from birth — while others develop later in life. Several are passed down through breeding lines, which is why screening matters both for individual dogs and for the breeds they come from.

The Eye Scheme, run jointly by the BVA, Kennel Club and ISDS, is the recognised way to screen for these conditions. A certified veterinary ophthalmologist examines the eyes and issues a certificate recording the findings.

  • Identify inherited or developing conditions early, so they can be monitored or managed.
  • Make informed breeding decisions and help protect future litters.
  • Meet breed club, breeder and Kennel Club requirements.

What happens at the examination

Iona carries out a thorough examination of your dog's eyes and completes the eye scheme certificate. Please bring your Royal Kennel Club or ISDS registration certificate to the appointment.
